The Geneva Health Forum will be holding its third symposium on global access to health 19-21 April, 2010 in Geneva. This year’s focus will be on Globalization, Crisis and Health Systems: Confronting Regional Perspectives. The symposium, which expects to draw – as before - over 1,000 participants will explore how, over the last decade, global health has undergone substantial transformations. For a long time politically neglected, global health issues have acquired prominence not only among concerned international organizations and civil society groups, but also, increasingly, governments. This momentum, however, is now being challenged. And not just by conservative anti-Obama forces in the United States.
GENEVA -- How can film-makers, whether through cinema, television, or webcasts, alert the public to avert or at least reduce risk in times of disaster, particularly weather-related catastrophes and climate change? Up till now, much of the work by media and film-makers has focused on the impact of disaster rather than seek solutions or help people know what they can do to be better prepared. The Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction , which will be holding its second international conference next month in Geneva (16-18 June, 2009), will stage an evening film festival at the Geneva International Conference Center on 18 June with selected trailers (Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and Franny Armstrong’s The Age of Stupid ) plus three shorts to illustrate the key issues at hand. There will also be a panel discussion with film producers and disaster experts.
The Geneva Network, a diverse group of Swiss and international diplomats, aid representatives, business leaders, journalists, academics and other professionals concerned by the need to develop and harness the wealth of Lake Geneva exceptional resources more effectively, will be publishing a “Call for Action” later this month. This is the second report by the Network in two years. The first was to provide a document for public debate. This second is to prompt action before it is too late.

Since its launch last June 2007 by the Swiss government, the new Geneva-based Global Humanitarian Forum (GHF) headed by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has drawn considerable scepticism among international aid professionals as to whether such an initiative is really needed.
