Cormatin: A Step into History

cormatin.jpgThis week, The Essential Edge is looking at Burgundy. Given that the Lake Geneva Region is culturally and historically part of Burgundy, we will be running several pieces on this part of France. The first is by Janet Hill of the Offbeat column.

CLUNY, France -- I think I was one of those kids who always day-dreamed about living in a castle one day. You know the castle – each room smothered in fantastic patterns, beautiful floors and painted ceilings, and a moat to keep out the bad guys. I still don’t live in a castle, but did find one in Burgundy that fits the bill. Chateau Cormatin was built on the foundations of a 13th century fortress, but its history doesn’t really get interesting until the late 16th century, when the owner discovered – during the Wars of Religion – that pillage was the way to riches (okay, as the descendant of Huguenots, I’m a bit prejudiced). But the story gets more interesting...

Don't waste that weekend: 10 rules for fabulous day trips

weekendfun.jpgA friend once defined the perfect outing as one that includes natural beauty, culture, fun and family. So why be afraid of doing anything out of the ordinary? Why spend the weekend paying bills or cleaning the house? On Saturday afternoon, why not get beyond the local mall? If you are an ex-pat, remember that your stay here is probably limited, so take advantage of the time you have to explore this fabulous region. Essential Edge contributor, Janet Hill, a pro on the subject, offers up 10 rules for a succesful outing :

Chateau de Vullierens - The Iris Collection

iris_one.jpegMORGES, Switzerland -- Every spring, I make the trek to a small chateau outside Morges (VD) to see the amazing collection of irises and gain some inspiration for my own garden. Chateau Vullierens opens this year on 21 May and will be open from 09.00-18.00 every day until 28 June. This is one of the world’s leading iris collections with many available for buying by the public. Imagine 380 varieties of iris in full bloom – and you can see why I associate Vullierens with spring in Switzerland. If that weren’t enough, once the irises are finished, the lilies come into bloom (all 180 varieties of them). But that’s not all – roses, peonies, poppies, hyacinths and delphiniums, among others, make this garden one of my favourites.

Basel: Kunst for Kids

blick_auf_muenster_foto_buergin.jpgBasel, 26 March, 2009 -- Probably few participants or visitors at this week’s BaselWorld 2009 (March 26- April 2), the earth’s paramount watch and jewellery business Expo, will have taken their kids, or even have time to do things other than hobnob about time pieces and luxury goods. However, Basel (or Basle, or Bale) – just over two and a half hours by train or car - certainly ranks as Switzerland’s art and music capital and is definitely worth a weekend trip, whether for good jazz, art appreciation, culinary delights or even a visit to Basel Zoo, one of the world’s best. Essential Edge contributor Janet Hill is a font of ideas of things to do and will be writing a regular Offbeat column on special outings for those in the Lake Geneva Region who want to do something a bit out of the ordinary - and for their kids.
